He’s at it again

Favre-5-6-(2)-250.jpgI don’t like saying I told you so, but when it comes to Brett Favre and his on-again, off-again retirement I think I really hit the mark. So, without further ado, please read the following excerpt from the February 10 blog that I wrote:

My feeling all along is that Favre has been purposely dragging his feet so the Jets have no choice but to cut him so they can move ahead. He didn’t want to come here last season and since he’s seen the two faces of the New York fans and media, he wants no part of playing under the microscope at this point in his career. Last year he wanted to go to Minnesota, but because they are divisional rivals of the Packers, that could not have happened. The Jets can’t trade him there because there is a clause in the agreement which states that New York would have to give up a first round draft pick. But if they cut him, he is free to go wherever he wants. Why the Vikings would want Favre is beyond me, but I guess that even at his age he is an upgrade over Tavaris Jackson. The bottom line is that I am neither a Favre fan nor hater. I just think that he owes it to the Jets to make a decision so they can move on and focus on the upcoming season.

Now I know that I’m not the only person who thought that this would happen and Brett may indeed stay retired, but it amazes me how this guy is going to eventually get what he wanted all along.  Don’t get me wrong: I think the Jets made the right choice my moving on with Sanchez, and if Brett still thinks that he can play on a high level I wish him all the best. But the way he has handled himself the last two years really tarnishes his image in my mind.

I do think that if all goes well in the meetings with Brad Childress this week that Brett will be back on the sidelines this coming season. It makes sense for the Vikings because taking a flier on Brett at this point is a better option than starting either Sage Rosenfels or Tavaris Jackson. It will also make the two divisional games between the Vikings and the Packers a real great watch for the fans.

Off topic question on the Giants…They’ve had a good draft, but are they really going to count on Nix? What if he’s a bust? We know what it’s like with no wide reciever. Don’t they have a backup plan besides depending on relative rookies and draft picks? What happened to Edwards?
    Thanks.

First off thanks for you comments “letsgoyankees”
My feeling on the draft is that you really don’t know what your going to get and as much as teams can scout a guy, you just don’t know how he will transition into the pro’s. The word on Nicks is that he had the best hands of any reciever in the draft and he was the most NFL ready receiver as well.

I agree with you that with the way the Giants team is built, they need a guy that will demand some double coverage like Burress did in past years and rookie recievers rarely have great first seasons but Jerry Reese has a great eye for drafting players who he feels can step right in and make immediate impacts, just look at the superbowl two seasons ago and the important contributions of Steve Smith, Ahmad Bradshaw, Kevin Boss and Aaron Ross and last year we saw Kenny Phillips make some really nice plays during the season.
Because Nicks was their fist round pick, alot of focus has been on him but the Giants also drafted reciever Ramses Barden the third round and I think he is a guy who you should keep an eye on because he is 6-6 and has the potential to be the big target in the red zone the Giants need.

I dont’ think that the Braylon Edwards trade was ever close to happening. I know we were all hearing rumors for weeks leading up to the draft but the Giants held on the same offer that they made from day one and I think the main reason why it didnt happen was that the Giants were worried that Edwards was going to seek some major money next season.
    Thanks
